Balancing Your ADHD World 4/2/2011 (Newark, DE)
April 2nd, 9 a.m. to 12 noon
Part One: Beyond Medication: Evidence-Based Non-Medical Interventions for ADHD
While the benefits of medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown through numerous well designed studies, medication alone rarely addresses the full range of issues caused by this complex neurobiological condition. This talk will review research regarding behavioral interventions, parenting and educational strategies for managing ADHD, along with a discussion of evidence for or against various popular complementary practices.
Part Two:
Mindful Care of ADHD: Using Mindfulness Training to Support Evidence-Based ADHD Interventions
Even with broad behavioral, educational and medical supports in place, living with ADHD is often challenging. ADHD increases stress and reactivity in parents and children, strains relationships, and hinders an ability to address issues both creatively and consistently as they arise. Decades of research suggest that mindfulness based techniques can support adults and families with ADHD by reducing stress, improving cognitive flexibility in problem solving, and facilitating the growth of healthy relationships. This workshop will review research into the neuroscience of mindfulness, including training in mindfulness meditation as it relates to ADHD, and provide evidence-based tools for use in daily life.
