While the benefits of medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown through numerous well designed studies, medication alone rarely addresses the full range of issues caused by this complex neurobiological condition. This talk will review research regarding behavioral interventions, parenting and educational approaches, along with a discussion of evidence for or against various popular complementary practices.

One of the newest findings in child development is the importance of executive function, a set of cognitive abilities that act as our “brain manager.” Executive function is responsible for self-monitoring, planning, organizing and even emotional regulation. It is critical for social development, family relationships and academics. The choices we make as adults can help or hinder the development of executive function as it evolves from infancy to young adulthood. This workshop will include a discussion of how research on executive function can guide teachers and parents in making wise decisions with children of any age.

ADHD is a disorder that affects children, parents and families, increasing parental anxiety and straining relationships. When parents recognize the broad impact of ADHD on daily life, including often overlooked effects of executive function issues, they can better attune their parenting styles to their children’s needs.

Dr. Bertin will discuss pertinent research and accessible strategies for parents, including techniques for managing common executive function related difficulties in children, and interventions that consider parenting, behaviorial, educational and medical supports. Importantly Dr. Bertin will review the implications of parents’ chronic stress on health, moment to moment reactivity, problem solving and relationships, to understand that better managing stress and taking care of yourself as a parent benefits your children.

ADHD in the Classroom: From Advocacy through Intervention, What Works and What Does Not

Over recent decades attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has become a seeming epidemic in schools. Is it over-diagnosed? What are its core symptoms beyond attention, issues, impulsivity and hyperactivity? How does ADHD impact everything from academic performance to interpersonal relationships? This workshop will include a discussion of the latest research into both medical and non-medical treatments of ADHD, including educational and curriculum choices, as well as signs that may indicate when students have it … or not.

Recognizing the broad implications of executive function deficits that are intrinsic to ADHD guides teachers towards classroom decisions that maximize academic performance and minimize distractions. A complete understanding of ADHD’s impact on learning expands far beyond attention and impulsivity. ADHD directly impairs skills as diverse as writing essays to reading comprehension, from organizing a backpack to emotional self-control and more. Seeing ADHD in its full complexity, teachers will be able to make proactive choices about everything from classroom management to choosing appropriate curriculum. This talk will describe how ADHD presents academically along with practical tips for managing it.

Parents, Children and ADHD – Getting Families Back on Track

ADHD is a complex neurobiological disorder that affects both the children who have it and their families. Executive function skills extend far beyond the ‘stereotypical’ ADHD symptoms, and affect multiple aspects of life for children and their parents. Recent research has also shown that parents of children with ADHD experience increased rates of anxiety, depression, stress and marital issues. When children have ADHD, it often affects their relationship with their parents, and their parents’ relationship with each other. This added stress makes it more difficult to parent consistently and to effectively problem solve.

Broad-based ADHD care integrates behavioral, education and medical supports that help both children and families move beyond these challenges. Understanding ADHD and executive functioning more fully allows parents to make the changes they need to get their children and families back on track.
